Maremma is the land of wide horizons, of towers, fortress and castles. The visitor will be astonished by the originality of the mix between archeology and modernity. Cities such as Castiglione della Pescaia, Punta Ala, Porto San Stefano, Porto Ercole, Ansedonia, Follonica will give you total satisfaction.
Will observing the green of pine trees and Maremma forests, or starring at the beautiful yellow of sunflower fields, it will be hard to believe that the same land was a long time ago witness of terrible wars between pirates or barbarian for example. Archeological discoveries reveal that Maremma as been inhabited for a millenium. The first people who changed the landscapes with the beautiful olive trees and cypresses were the Estrucans.Estrucans lived in the area at first millenium before J.-C., they named the area. After Dioclétien in 300 after J.-C. romans named it "Tuscia", then during middle age "Toscana" the land of Etruscans.
Montemerano. Only 2km from Poderi, Montemerano is a tiny medieval village on hilltop. Architectural constructions such as the castle, also the San Giorgio church with mural paintings from Sienna tradition (XV-XVIII centuries)
Saturnia. Ancient Etruscan site, this wonderful village is a thermal place. Just before going in the village you should have a stop at "Cascata del Mullino", where it is possible to take a bath in hot spring water (38°). Pitigliano/Sovana/Sorano. Fascinating villages, composed of Antiquity, Middle-age and Renaissance influences, creating timeless places. Pitigliano offer one of the best panoramic view of south Tuscany. Houses are chopped on the volcanic rocks called Tuf. The city is on a giant volcanic rock. Etruscans used to live in Pitigliano. They also dig and created a labyrinth in the rock. During 1930 all the graves served as refuge. Nowadays there are use as wineshop and oenotecas.
Sovana is very old city with many marks of Etruscan past. Also a wonderful Duomo (Church) of XII century.
Sorano is an astonishing landscape of central Tuscany. The city is located on a plateau and surrounded by cliffs. Also many Etruscans graves to see.
Orvieto. Tiny city built on a tuf hill on top of Paglia valley. You can also visit the Duomo with mural paintings of Luca Signorelli, one of the most famous church of italy, and the pure expression of Italian Gothic style.
Garavicchio. Incredible Tarot Garden made by Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely, between 1979 and 1996. You will find 22 gigantic sculptures forming like a small village. Open from 15 may till 15 october every day 2:30pm untill 7:30pm
Orbetello. CThe city is build between the Monte Argentario (635m) and the coast. You will find etruscan walls, spanish style castle and a Duomo with Gothic Italian style. Just north to the city you will find Porto San Stefano a small fisher harbor, also the ferry to go to Giglio island. Still on Monte Argentario seacoast you will find Porto Ercole, a fishermen village with beautiful spanish castles. The water is turquoise, astonishing seaside.
Parco Regionale della Maremma ou Parc naturel de l’Uccellina. Maremma natural park has been created in 1975, it is 9000 hectares between Marina di Alberese and Talamone. Morellino di Scansano DOCG. DOC started in 1978, in 2006 obtention of the DOCG label. This is the most known appellation of the area. It goes on Scansano, a part of Manciano, Magliano, Grosseto, Campagnatico, Sempronianno and Roccalbegna. Minimum of 85% of Sangiovese. Since 5-7 years the area as become a very attractive place for investments, especially the triangle Scansano-Magliano-Grosseto. Best vineyards : Villa Patrizia, Roccapesta, Le Pupille, La Selva (bio), Costanza Malfatti, Terre di Talamo, Lohsa, Terenzi, Val delle Rose, Mantellassi, Provveditore, Moris Farms, La Carletta (bio).
Parrina DOC: (white, rouge and rosé, Sangiovese, Trebbiano toscano, Ansonica and Chardonnay) one of the eldest appellation (1971) and also the smallest (only one producer !). Just after Orbetello in Manciano direction. Possible to taste wine at the domain La Parrina. They also have wonderful cheeses and fresh fruits and vegetables. Organic production.
Bianco di Pitigliano DOC: white, with local grapes : Trebbiano Toscano, Greco, Malvasia bianca and Verdello. Appellation born in 1966. The area is Pitigliano and Sorano and a small part of Scansano and Manciano. Unfortunately a white wine often simple that reminds Orvieto wine. Good wine to discover in Tuscany with fishes or sea food. Big differences between producers, you must choose good producers.Best producers : Sassotondo “Isolina”, Montaúto,Tenuta Roccaccia, Provveditore, La Stellata, Sopra La Ripa, Cantina di Pitigliano “Ildebrando”.
Ansonica Costa dell’Argentario DOC : born in 1995 this appellation concern Giglio Island, from Argentario, Manciano, Orbetello and Capalbio. Wine with a low personality, to be drank young and fresh. Ansonica is a very pleasant wine will being on the seaside.Best producers : Santa Lucia, La Parrina and Cantina Sociale Cooperativa Capalbio.
Capalbio DOC : white, rosé, red, sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon, Trebbiano toscano and Vermentino. Young appellation 1999 present in Capalbio, Manciano, Magliano and Orbetello. Very interesting red (Losco, Riparossa and Moresco). Also nice Vermentinos.Best producers : Santa Lucia, Cantina Sociale Cooperativa Capalbio and Cantina Bruni.
Sovana DOC : also a young appellation (1999) goes through Pitigliano, Sorano, and Manciano. Red grapes : Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, Alicante and other local grapes.
Best producers : Sassotondo, Montaúto, La Busattina (bio) and Cantina di Pitigliano.
In IGT (Indicazione Geogràfica Tipica) some very interesting wines are produced in the area :
